Letter from the founder

Data Zen is a personal project for me, because it was built to solve the problems that I faced myself. I believed that a service like this should exist, and when I couldn’t find one I started on the long journey to build it myself.

 

I’ve been using power bi and other business intelligence tools since it was first released in 2015. And when I worked at a large corporation we had a huge IT team to implement these systems to their fullest extent.

 

But when I was working as a CFO in digital marketing space I realized that all of my clients needed these systems, but they didn’t have the IT resources to implement them properly.

 

It’s my personal belief that business data should be accessible to all members of an organization. We’re on a mission to make that a reality.We hope you join us on the journey!

Our path to Data Zen

2016

Game Table Baron

Game Table Baron was the first company I launched. Through a combination of search engine optimization, paid advertising, and content marketing.

 

Complicated board game spending was been a growing niche in the economy and Game Table Baron specialized in selling nice dining tables which could be converted to poker/board game tables.Game Table Baron was sold in 2017 for a small exit.

 

The capital from this helped to fund the initial data integrations and models which became Data Zen. The digital marketing experience has also helped to see everything.

2017

Digital Marketing Consultant / Kickstarter

Once Game Table Baron was running on auto pilot, I started consulting with other e-commerce companies that needed help. There was a variety of experience such as launching Amazon FBA products, optimizing PPC campaigns and helping to launch a kickstarter campaign which raised over $9X,000.

 

My plan was to leave the finance world altogether. But all of my clients continued to have the same recurring problems:

-Setting targets that aligned between the marketing and finance goals

-Knowing if they were profitable

-Building a plan to reach profitability

-Maintaining proper inventory planning

-And optimizing for the sale of the business.

 

Because I was a CPA with finance background, my clients continued to involve me in these discussion. But because I was trying to leave the finance world behind, I resisted this pull. But by the end of 2017 it was clear that there was a strong need for this type of service. So I launched Marketing CFO.

2018-2023

Founded Marketing CFO

Marketing CFO was launched to give e-commerce and digital marketing companies a fractional CFO (Chief Financial Officer) to serve as a partner to the CEO.

 

Because we understood both the finance world and the unique challenges of the new digital marketing industry, we were able to provide unique value to our clients.

 

We also worked on over 57 acquisitions during this time as either from acquirer clients, acquiree clients, or as a due diligence consultant. This experience has been very helpful in Launching Data Zen as a side project:


In my corporate finance career I saw the power of business intelligence to be able to give decision makers.

2020

Data Zen Begins As A Side Project As Part of Marketing CFO

Serving as an effective CFO without good data was impossible. By necessity, we started helping our clients consolidate their data in order to advise on decisions.We had some success with this, but it started to take up too much time to effectively serve as CFO as well. We realized that it would take all time, effort, and resources available to actually solve this problem for our clients.

2022-2023

Data Zen Becomes Full Focus

While we were seeing success with Data Zen it was becoming clear we couldn’t continue to fulfill CFO responsibilities and provide the list of integrations we needed to.

 

We also needed substantial time and capital to make Data Zen a reality.

2024

Data Zen Launches Beta

Data Zen has not taken on any new clients in two years. 2024 is the first time that we are releasing to the public.Our current Beta focuses on serving the needs of brand managers, ppc analysts, financial analysts, and marketing analysts. The future

We’re on a mission to make business data accessible for everyone. We see lots of potential to expand in the business intelligence space and also to integrate our models with AI tools in the future.
